What I'm doing now
After 20+ years leading product and platform engineering at large companies, I'm pivoting to building products solo. Small, opinionated tools I'd use myself.
Most of what I ship now leans heavily on AI and agentic development. The fun part of the last two decades — the craft, the product instincts, the system-level judgment — is still there. The rest is increasingly done by agents I trust to do the boring parts well.
My Products
- Rustic Playground rustic-playground.app · macOS · free & open source
- A playground for learning Rust (and C/C++, Zig, Swift) on macOS — inspired by Swift Playgrounds. Write code, press ⌘R, watch it run.
Where I've been
- VP, Cloud Semtech / Sierra Wireless
- Led product engineering across IoT cloud and edge platforms (AWS/Azure, embedded Linux/RTOS), cellular connectivity, and the MVNO that runs through it. Millions of commercial devices in the wild. Drove re-architecture and consolidation of overlapping platforms. Played a key role in Semtech's acquisition of Sierra Wireless and the integration of teams across NA, EU, and Asia.
- Chief Architect The Weather Company / IBM · 2011–2020
- Chief Architect, then Head of Cloud Platform Migration, at one of the world's largest digital weather platforms. Led modernization and large-scale AWS migration — small elite teams owning core data services, APIs, CDN strategy, and cloud infrastructure. Tens of billions of API calls per day.
- Earlier EarthLink · Thermo Fisher · Unisys
- Senior engineering and platform roles across large-scale data systems, analytics, and enterprise operations.
Things I care about
- Products that respect the person using them.
- Small teams. Clear ownership. Taste as a discipline.
- AI used where it makes software better — not to paper over bad software.
- Building things because they're fun, not because they scale.
